HAVE YOU BEEN ON A SMALL SHIP CRUISE BEFORE?

REVIEW

In October my wife and I boarded Ponant Le Champlain, (180 passengers), at Boston USA for a 2 week cruise to Mexico. My description this cruise was straight from hell and relates to the “campylobacter” food poisoning I suffered. Food poisoning/upset stomachs is not necessarily unusual on some cruise ships but in this case I became seriously ill.

The food poisoning in my case can easily be directed to the “raw” foie gras that was served on top of beef as a main course. The Campylobacter bacteria was confirmed by testing on my immediate return home. In the UK this type of food poisoning, it is compulsory for the infection to be formerly reported to under the Health Protection Regulations.

Campylobacter bacteria can invade your body system and develop symptoms called “Acute motor axonal neuropathy” (AMAN)/Guillian Barre Syndrome. An illness caused by campylobacter bacteria that attacks the nerve ends of legs, arms and the ability to stand. On getting home my food poisoning symptoms got worse and I could no longer stand, walk or use my hands. I was admitted to hospital and after extensive tests over two weeks AMAN was diagnosed. We are now into March and I still have difficulty walking, standing and very limited use of my hands. It is possible/probable that I’ll never walk properly again or have use of my hands. The hospital consultant said “if it had gone to the lungs it could have been fatal”.

I made contact with Ponant by email and letters to head office (that had to be signed for on receipt) but Ponant have totally ignored my concerns and seem to have shut down any contact with me. Although I have no evidence of other guests being ill the serious effect on my body could not have been an isolated incident.

It seriously concerns me that this cruise line could have decimated other passengers on the cruise and what is more important they can easily carry on in the same manner.

REVIEW

Amazon Clipper Premium runs 3 cruises from Manaus, a 2 night cruise on the Amazon, a 3 night cruise on the Rio Negro, and a 5 night cruise which is a combination of the two. We did the combined cruise. The Amazon Clipper Premium is a traditional style Amazon riverboat with 16 cabins. There are 4 decks, including a sundeck on top. There is a bar, air-conditioned restaurant, air-conditioned lounge, and outdoor bar and seating area and two hot tubs. This cruise is aimed at those who have an interest in the wildlife of the Amazon.

The cabins are of a good size, with a big bed (or 2 twins), plenty of storage, a small safe, air conditioning, a big PVC framed picture window with river views, which slides open and a bathroom with toilet, washbasin and shower. Toilet paper has to go in the bin.

Free tea, coffee and water are available all day, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price and are all buffet style. The food was excellent, there was a good selection of food including plenty of local dishes if you were feeling adventurous. The bar was well stocked and the prices of alcohol and soft drinks seemed reasonable.

The crew was excellent and very helpful. Only the guides spoke English, but communication never seemed to be a problem. The boat was only half full for the second part of the trip, so there was plenty of space for everyone. We had 2 guides who were very knowledgeable, we were taken out on 2 canoes for the many opportunities to explore the Amazon and the River Negro. These included many early and night excursions to see wildlife (we saw lots!), we also went jungle trekking, piranha fishing and visited local communities. We saw the incredible meeting of the waters between the Amazon and the Rio Negro and had a number of opportunities to swim in the river.

The itinerary was pretty full on, we were woken at 5.50 or 6am every day, but if you want to see the wildlife, this is what you have to do. You can of course, skip excursions, but why would you? Our guides and canoe drivers worked really hard to let us see as much wildlife as possible. If I had a criticism, it would be that they were over enthusiastic and we sometimes disturbed the wildlife we were trying to see by getting too close. Also, there was a bit of duplication between the two combined cruises, but they try to minimise that.

Overall, if you want a cruise that combines the wildlife of the Amazon with the luxuries of modern life, this is the cruise for you!

REVIEW

Antarctica  is definitely a once in a lifetime trip. This was our first ever cruise, our expectations were well and truly exceeded. We were very happy that we chose the Silver Cloud. My husband had done a lot of research before booking — we wanted a trip that was going to give us the ultimate experience in Antarctica. The staff of Silver Cloud certainly achieved this. Everyone from the dining staff to our personal butler and room attendant were fantastic in looking after our every need. (My husband ordered 2 G&T’s one night to our suite, not only did we get our Gins but the whole bottle was delivered).

But I have to say the expedition staff were the people who really made this trip for us. Being able to get out on the Zodiacs twice a day (this was one of the main reasons we chose Silverseas), was fantastic. But their jobs didn’t end here, the expedition team gave lectures and each day we had a recap of the days activities. The team would also have lunch and dinners with the guests. The photo lab on the boat was a great extra to be able to use a computer to upload, etc photos. The entertainment team had plenty of activities arranged for the younger guests, from study sessions to team trivia (even adults were known to join in the trivia). The solo travelers were also looked after with get-togethers. At the end of the trip all guests received a thumb drive with the story and photos of the trip. We just loved our trip and are already looking froward to the next one.

AmaWaterways was first class all the way. We did the Romantic Rhine Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. Everyday was a new stop with fantastic excursions and experiences. We went from large world-class cities to small French villages! Enjoyed wine tasting, beer tasting, and going to the top of the Swiss Alps! The river cruise boat was beautiful with outstanding wine (new ones every day) and amazing dinners with local cuisine. And, with going in late December there were no crowds and we were able to enjoy all the attractions to their fullest! A must do experience!

REVIEW

This is a small boat cruise like no other.  There are 3 Princesses and 1 Queen, all are converted houseboats and no expense nor luxury seems to have been excluded.  There are 2 Princesses with 4 bedrooms and 1 Princess with 5 bedrooms whilst the Queen is larger with 14 suites all with outer decks. We travelled on the 5-bedroom Princess and were lucky enough to have the suite on the top deck which opened directly onto the viewing deck where it had its own table and chairs outside. This was a larger suite than the others. The food was plentiful and delicious with individual tastes catered for.  There was ample time to relax and chat to fellow passengers, swapping stories and experiences.  The cruise included:

  • Accommodation, all meals, soft drinks, mineral water, coffee, tea, and local beer & wine
  • Water-based game viewing and bird watching on tender boats
  • A land-based cultural tour of a local village
  • Tiger & bream fishing in season (tiger fishing is strictly catch and release)
  • Road transfers to and from Kasane Airport and Kasane Immigration Office located on the Botswana side of the Botswana side of the Chobe river
  • Boat transfers between Kasane Immigration Office in Botswana and Namibia Immigration Office

The cultural village visit was very interesting with local artifacts for sale at the end of the dancing demonstration. My husband went out early on a fishing trip and caught a tiger fish which excited him greatly. I chose instead to relax on the boat as it cruised slowly along the Chobe. The game cruises were an early start, leaving at 6 am sharp, returning for breakfast at 10 am.  There is also a photography tender boat as well as the standard tender. The photography tender boat has a limited number of seats but the added advantage is they all swivel through 360 degrees offering maximum viewing and photo opportunities. A much better experience than cricking your neck on a standard tender.

We cannot recommend this cruise highly enough. The Zambezi Queen is a larger vessel which does not travel as far but is more luxurious we understand. However, we have not travelled on the Queen.

REVIEW

We had a delightful trip on the Glen Tarsan. The crew were amazing — charming, helpful, efficient — and a jar of vegemite appeared for breakfast on the second day which made two Aussies feel pretty special.

The only reason the cabins only rate a 4 is that the bathroom was very small — however the beds were very comfortable and warm.  To be honest we spent all day sitting upstairs chatting, eating, drinking coffee and watching the world go by so a small cabin didn’t matter at all.

The food was delicious and we loved sitting at the large table and getting to know out fellow travellers.

I will never forget waking up in the silence of Loch a Choire on our first morning with soft mist sitting on the hills and just the sound of waves lapping against the wee boat.

WE CAME A LONG, LONG WAY TO DO THIS CRUISE AND IT SURPASSED OUR EXPECTATIONS.

In fact we enjoyed our cruise so much that we are coming back to Scotland next year — this time to cruise around Skye and the Small Isles in one of the bigger boats — The Glen Etive.

REVIEW

Our UnCruise Family reunion/anniversary trip to Alaska was spectacular! The public spaces on the ship were very welcoming and ample, with a surprisingly complete library on Alaska & wildlife, along with other reading materials.

Attention to details is what made this cruise—from the hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps waiting for the snorkelers as they got out of the frigid waters into the skiff, to having a national parks ranger have a presentation then spend the nite on board being assessable to all kinds of interesting discussions, to the slide show the last night with photos of all of us from the previous week—a gift to each of us. The activities were as mild as touring around on a skiff with a knowledgable funny guide to as intense as a 6 hour kayak trip—lunch & jokes included. You choose—2 activities a day were offered and although we chose different activities each of us felt our choice was the best! Wildlife viewing or searching was the common denominator and we weren’t disappointed!

I haven’t even mentioned the delicious meals and fun drinks served with smiles by a collection of dear & enthused staff that know how to connect! The cruise ended way too quickly with an amazing collection of  memories.

REVIEW

We’ll never forget the zodiac cruise rides to see icebergs and glaciers! Our 9 year old twins were particularly impressed by the “vikings” who surprised us with hot chocolate during one of the rides. This was our first ever cruise, so we have no comparison, but we loved this way of seeing Alaska. The views were amazing and the ship’s captain would stop if there was interesting sea life or wildlife spotted.

Food was great, cabins were comfortable and roomy, the crew was friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the naturalists and  programs, though didn’t attend all that was offered as it would have been more than we wanted. Some days were a little slow for the kids, but they managed as there were a few other children on board.

The atmosphere was relaxed and casual and we had a lot of fun meeting our 92 fellow passengers, who seemed to enjoy the same type of vacation experience as we did.

Highly recommended.

I enjoyed the UnCruise hospitality and the staff’s spirit of adventure. Visiting Alaska on a small ship allowed us to go into more remote areas and see the bears, mountain goats and sea lions up-close. The captain would stop the ship or change course if he knew there were whales or other wildlife to see.

The food was outstanding. the chef just kept creating better and better local delicacies. I never had a problem getting my meals prepared gluten-free.

It would be nice to see more people from other countries on these cruises. Most of the passengers on our ship were American.

I’d do another UnCruise anytime!

HAVE YOU BEEN ON A SMALL SHIP CRUISE BEFORE?

I’ve been on 1 small ship cruise.

REVIEW

We took our three children (ages 16, 14 and 12) on this trip and everyone loved it for different reasons. Our oldest was able to talk with so many of the naturalists on the ship and really used her love of bones and history, and she loved the crew. Our middle son isn’t very social, but the crew on the bridge let him come and hang out and learn how the ship worked and he was fascinated with all of it. Our youngest met many other kids his age and loved being able to explore the ship on his own. All three kids loved the freedom they had on the ship.

My husband and I thought the cabins were very nice and so comfortable and had everything we needed. The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful. Meals were nice but became tedious after 7 days, but everything was very good. The excursions were interesting and the sights amazing — glaciers and icebergs and bears and seals and so on. Our one complaint would probably be that outings were a little slow-paced and a lot of time was spent on education, which is awesome, but a little slow sometimes.

All of us loved the experience and the ship and its crew!

REVIEW

On board the Scenic Spirit, the staff was friendly, attending to all our needs. The cabin was well laid out with the bedroom separated from the sitting area; it had everything we needed and our cabin attendant was efficient.  The pace of the cruise as well as the itinerary was terrific…… Stopping along the way was well planned and thoroughly enjoyable.  The Mekong River is one of the most scenic rivers of the world and the scenery showed well from the Spirit; we saw some great sunsets. Having travelled with Scenic before, we expected a great trip…….and we got it!
