Sleep Under The Stars on These Small Ships

By Anne Kalosh.

Who hasn’t yearned to spend the night on deck, a skyful of stars overhead, the sound of water gently splashing against the hull, moonlight glittering on the waves?

Some small-ship lines make that dream come true.

Celebrity Flora

Celebrity Cruises’ Galápagos new build Celebrity Flora is going to introduce top-deck glamping, complete with dining, drinking and sleeping under one of the most spectacular night skies in the world.

Four starstruck guests per night will be able to book the experience and participate in this one-night-only adventure. The reservations include two luxuriously inviting cabanas, one fitted with a double bed for sleeping, and the other set up for savoring an alfresco meal with wine. A naturalist will be available to point out the stars and constellations directly from the cabana seats.

Campfire-inspired culinary delights—from cocktails to s’mores—will be specially curated for the evening. A full bedside breakfast is also part of the experience.

Celebrity Flora, currently under construction at De Hoop shipyard in the Netherlands, is due to debut in spring 2019. Sailings from Baltra in the Galápagos begin May 26. Alternating 10- and 11-night cruise-tours will be available, along with a 16-night itinerary that pairs an inner loop and outer loop route.

U by Uniworld

Young-at-heart river cruise operator U by Uniworld is introducing rooftop camping in 2019. For a fee, travelers can sleep in Uniworld-provided tents on the top deck, complete with a nightcap cocktail and breakfast picnic basket.

U by Uniworld’s sleek, black-hulled riverboats are The A, which makes its home on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers that flow through the Netherlands and Central Europe, and The B, which cruises along France’s Seine.

SeaDream Yacht Club

Chic SeaDream Yacht Club, whose motto is “It’s Yachting, Not Cruising,” has long featured sleeping under the stars in comfy Balinese beds. Topped with thick cushions for lounging and sunbathing by day, by night these platform beds are made up with Belgian linens, duvets and pillows.

One secluded honeymoon bed can be made up for newlyweds and sprinkled with rose petals.

SeaDream I and SeaDream II sail to yachting harbors in the British Virgin Islands, St. Barths, Tobago and Vieques (Puerto Rico) in the Caribbean, where Cuba joins the roster in 2019, and to chic Mediterranean spots like Capri, Mykonos, Monte Carlo and Saint-Tropez.
