Atlas Ocean Voyages World Traveller Antarctica Review

We spent 3 days getting to Ushuaia from California (one day to Miami, one day to Buenos Aires, one day to Ushuaia). We knew we would have 2 days going through the Drake’s Passage to have 4 days in Antarctica, then the entire travel in reverse to get home.

Unfortunately, there was a mechanical problem with the ship and we spent 2 days in port — cutting our Antarctica time from 4 days to 2 days. We were told it was “normal maintenance” and we would be underway shortly. By the end of the first day at port, they admitted it was a “digital problem” and, once fixed, we had to wait another day for an inspector to sign off. We were not given excursions in the meantime.

For those of us that asked to be transferred to the sister ship leaving in 2 days, we were told it was completely booked. But, we watched as several hand-chosen by “corporate” got to board the other ship. (And they were given money to change their return flights, hotel and transfers.)

For us, we got 2 daily excursions of 1 hour each — 3 on zodiacs and only one on land. And we were offered compensation of 25% refund (even though we missed half of our time in Antarctica) and 50% off a future cruise (an offer they give to everyone).

The cruise we got — 4 hours of excursions — was not one we would have taken had we known. Atlas has taken a “dig in your heels” position after lying to us and not considering how much it cost us in time and money to get a minimal experience in Antarctica. They did not take care of us and worse, they don’t care.

When considering a cruise, choose a company with more integrity.
