Island Windjammers Croatia Cruises — 2 Dates Available in Aug & Sept 2023

By Elysa Leonard

We’ve got big news from one of our favorite small-ship cruise lines, Island Windjammers (IWJ).

Known by many as “the island girls,” IWJ’s 26-pax classic clipper ship Vela and the 10-passenger Diamant schooner have been delighting passengers for years with their quirky Caribbean itineraries that change with the wind or the whim of the captain.

This year, Island Windjammers has added a limited special itinerary that takes passengers to an entirely new set of islands and sweet spots along the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea aboard the 36-pax Klara.

If you have ever cruised with IWJ before, you know the vibe. It’s a laid-back, mellow, never over-programmed style that allows you to go at your own pace.

And now you can have that experience in Europe!

Five years ago I was lucky to have experienced the IWJ vibe firsthand when I sailed to the French West Indies on the Vela. When I look back at all of the small-ship cruises I have taken, this one is at the top of my list!

It was a once in a lifetime experience. I quickly bonded with the crew and fellow passengers as we made memories and experienced new places and activities together. We truly felt like family by the end of the week!

Island Windjammers Croatia Cruises

Here is a quick introduction to the Island Windjammers Croatia cruises aboard the sailing schooner Klara.

You could say the 36-pax, 3-masted Klara is a cousin to Island Windjammer’s Caribbean-based island girls Vela and Diamant.

This European beauty is tall, modern, and a bit more spacious than her well-loved Caribbean sisters.

But don’t get too jealous island girls, Island Windjammers and Brodosplit, the owners of Klara, have partnered to offer just two exclusive 12-night Croatia cruises.

Island Windjammer’s pair of 12-night Croatia cruises sails round-trip from historic Split on August 20 and September 3, 2023.

You’ll visit some of Croatia’s most beautiful islands and breathtaking ports along the famous Dalmatian Coast. Plus, this itinerary also includes the gorgeous port of Kotor, Montenegro.

Experience the history of Croatia on walks around each port, surrounded by ancient ruins, Roman artifacts, and the gorgeous Adriatic Sea.

From strolling down narrow cobblestone streets to walking along ancient ramparts or visiting crystal-clear lakes and waterfalls, every day will be a new exciting adventure.

Enjoy sunbathing on a Croatian beach or experience the stunning shades of blue on an excursion to the famous Blue Cave.

Split, Croatia

Split’s palm fringed promenade is the ideal location for watching boats and ferries entering and departing from the busy harbor. Coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and hip boutiques attract visitors from around the globe. Walk through the Bronze Gates, and marvel at Diocletian’s Palace and the Temple of Jupiter. This is ancient history, and you’re living it now!

Hvar Island

Summer lavender fields are always in bloom in the essential oils and sachets sold in the outdoor marketplace. You’ll find hints of lavender in sparkling wine, pastries, and cookies too. A fortress stands watch on the hill above Hvar Town, monastery bells ring, and the lively chatter and laughter of happy tourists spills from seaside cafes to the beautiful beaches.

Viz Island

Fisherman from Viz ply the Adriatic in their traditional Falkusa sail boats.

The landscape here is peppered with 12th-century monasteries and Romanesque churches, one of which we can all relate to — Our Lady of Pirates! Visit soft pebble beaches, natural springs, and wineries that produce grappa, the perfect finale at any Croatian meal.

Polače

A ripple from a fallen leaf or a passing school of fish confirms that these are lakes that you’re staring into in Mljet National Park. Slip into the cool refreshing water, hike the natural trails through lush greenery up to beautiful vistas, or explore nature by kayak or bike.

Dubrovnik

When arriving by sea, you will be awestruck by the massive, ancient city walls that loop around the heart of Croatia, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik. Climb up Mincenta Towers, or take a cable car for a bird’s eye view of Dubrovnik.

Old Town pulses with energy. Sidewalk cafes serve thimbles of coffee, along with the freshest fish and seafood you’ve ever savored. Game of Thrones fans will recognize many spots featured in the popular series.

Kotor, Montenegro

Small but packed with things to see and do, lose track of time exploring Kotor’s magnificent cathedrals, fortresses, and hidden alleyways. Each turn inspires you to discover more of this tiny Mediterranean gem.

Šipan Island

Picture a village of red-roofed stone houses, framed by forested hills. You have arrived in Šipan, the largest island in the archipelago of Elephati.

Here you will be wowed by the remains of a 1529-built Renaissance castle, as well as Pakljena Tower, which dates back to 1563. Olives, figs, and citrus grow wild and scent the air of this sun-drenched paradise.

Korčula Island

There’s no whining about wine on this fabulous island. You’ll sip some of the best in the region. It’s said that Marco Polo was born on Korčula. We have to wonder why he would leave the stunning beaches, the mouth-watering tapas, and the finest wines, to discover China.

Brač Island

Breathtakingly scenic views can be found everywhere in Brač, and are not to be missed. Buy fresh olive oil straight from the shade of one of the olive trees that produced it, while enjoying a chat with the property owners.

Pučišća, a town on Brač, is described as one of the prettiest villages in Europe. Local quarries provide the white stone used in the gleaming buildings and statues.

Brač’s most famous landmark is probably Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) Beach. Here you’ll find hipsters, tourists, and locals alike filling the beach bars and sun loungers.

Trogir

If you’re not afraid of heights and don’t suffer from claustrophobia, we dare you to climb to the bell tower in the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. You’re guaranteed panoramic views, along with an aerobic workout.

Those who prefer to chill with a cold beverage or dish of gelato should head down to the city square, and enjoy the local street performers. Kamerango Castle is a popular attraction, along with people-watching on Okrug beach.
