Silver Wind to Become Ice-Class Ship
By Anne Kalosh.
Silver Wind is going to get a second extensive refurbishment, completing a project started in late 2018, that will include a strengthened, ice-class hull, bigger suites and other upgrades.
It’s all part of the “Project Invictus” fleet enhancement program announced following Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. taking a two-thirds ownership stake in Silversea Cruises.
Silver Wind’s second refurbishment will begin in August 2020. The ship will emerge with the ability to operate both classic and expedition itineraries.
Along with the ice-class hull and equipment for cruising in remote regions, it will gain a fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks. Further changes include an additional full suites upgrade, an improved theater, and a completely refurbished spa and salon. Also look for new touches that will enhance La Dame (the top specialty dining spot, by Relais & Châteaux), La Terrazza (for Italian cuisine), the main bar, the Observation Lounge, the Panorama Lounge, the Pool Bar and public bathrooms.
By accommodating fewer passengers—254, down from 294 now—Silver Wind will offer a higher space ratio and crew-to-guest ratio and more upper-category suites.
The ship will continue traveling to classic destinations like the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, while adding new expeditions to places like the Arctic and Antarctica.
The enhanced ship will resume service on Nov. 10, 2020, with an inaugural season in Antarctica. Various 10-, 12-, 14- and 18-day itineraries round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina, will be offered. On Feb. 15, 2021, a 21-day cruise will depart Ushuaia for Antarctica and then continue on to Cape Town, South Africa.
During the late 2018 refurbishment, Silver Wind’s public spaces underwent extensive renovations. The show lounge, the Restaurant, the card and conference room, and the library were redone. New carpets were laid throughout, and corridors were refurbished. All suites were improved. Decks were renovated and outdoor furniture replaced.
