Small Ship News: Star Clippers Plans Eagerly Awaited New Ship

New Star Clippers Ship

May 2015

Star Clippers just announced it’s building a fourth ship in Split, Croatia; its first new-build since the launch of ROYAL CLIPPER in July 2000. The new vessel, yet to be named, will be the largest and most ambitious project to date and will be launched in the second half of 2017, carrying 300 passengers, measuring 8,770 tons and powered by more than 6,350 square meters of sails.

Technically a five-masted, square-rigged barque, it will be a near-replica of the France II, commissioned in 1911 and the largest square rigger ever built. Just as the original France II eclipsed Preussen (which the line’s ROYAL CLIPPER is modelled on) more than a century ago as the world’s largest square rigger, Star Clippers newbuild will replace its sister, ROYAL CLIPPER, as the largest ship of its kind afloat today.

The vessel will have generous deck space, three pools, and a watersports platform in the stern. One restaurant will accommodate all guests and cabin choices include 34 suites with balconies and four luxurious owner’s suites. Like the rest of the fleet, there will also be a library and an al fresco Tropical Bar. The ship will start out sailing in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
